Boost To Campaign To Secure The Future Of Purton Hulks

AN IMPORTANT step has been taken towards securing the future of the nation’s maritime heritage, thanks to the efforts of a campaign group.

The Friends of Purton work tirelessly to protect the ships’ graveyard on the banks of the River Severn at Purton, and recently took part in discussions with interested parties who included representatives from English Heritage, the Rt Hon Margaret Hodge MP, Minister for Culture, Media and Sport, and David Drew, MP for Stroud.

The talks, which took place at the Houses of Parliament Estate, led to the decision to formally ’schedule’ the Harriett, one of the most important vessels currently beached on the foreshore.

‘Scheduling’ is shorthand for the process through which nationally important sites and monuments are given legal protection by being placed on a list, or ’schedule’. A schedule has been kept since 1882 of monuments whose preservation is given priority over other land uses.

“It was a very upbeat conversation,” said local marine historian Paul Barnett.

“English Heritage opened the meeting, in front of Margaret Hodge and David Drew. I have to say that David Drew has been a real legend - he’s really stuck his neck out for our cause.

“This is a significant step forward for the Friends of Purton, who have worked very hard to achieve this and I’m absolutely thrilled.

“An awful lot of ‘hands on’ work has been carried out in the past few months and there is now a comprehensive record of the Purton Hulks. We can now see how much destruction is being done.

“This sets a precedent for us, and with a total 81 vessels on the foreshore I’ve got to say it’s one down, 8 link
